1) Fixing & valuing SLEEP above all else.
2) Managing my STRESS, daily.
Sleep
My narrative around sleep was simply that “I was just one of those people that only needed four to five hours of sleep to function”...
HAHA No. That was the silliest idea I ever head, even though I tried to convince myself for almost a decade.
I was barely functioning, but I kept telling myself “I’m fine” just so I could get through each week. This was a maladaptive coping mechanism I adopted, purely so I could continue to avoid the fact that I was so fatigued & sleep deprived, but I didn’t want to admit it to myself and actually face & change the deep-seeded behaviours to fix it.
Stress
I had a chronic obsession with needing to do more. Not necessarily be productive, but always just feeling like I needed to do more, because what I was doing, was never "enough". This drove a very unhealthy work/life balance and next-to-no daily recovery or down time, and my cortisol was through the roof, daily.
The excessive, dysfunctional stress-loading also impacted my sleep cycle, and vice versa, not getting enough sleep made me more stressed.
I was heavily reliant on caffeine to function, and to continue to avoid fixing the actual problem. I thought nailing my nutrition and training would be enough. But it wasn’t, and it never will be (for anyone) even with all the supplements in the world.
Without proper sleep and stress management, your health, body composition and hormones will always be suboptimal or completely dysfunctional.
These are two major aspects that effect mental, emotional & physical health & performance and your ability to drop body fat and keep it off long term (something I’ve also struggled with in the past).
